The 5 Days Mt Elgon Hiking will take you through Mt Elgon National Park, one of the most beautiful mountain in East Africa and the second highest in Kenya. It covers an area of 169 km2 and lies 140 km North East of Lake Victoria. The Distance from the capital city of Kenya Nairobi is 470kms.The climate is moist to moderate dry. This beautiful national Park is endowed with cliffs caves, waterfalls, gorges, calderas among others. Located on the Uganda-Kenya border it is also the oldest and largest solitary, volcanic mountain in East Africa. Its vast form, 80km in diameter, rises more than 3,000m above the surrounding plains.
Mount Elgon National Park is home to over 300 species of birds, including the endangered Lammergeyer. Small antelopes, forest monkeys, elephants and buffalos also live on the mountainside. The higher slopes are protected by national parks in Uganda and Kenya, creating an extensive trans-boundary conservation area which has been declared a UNESCO Man & Biosphere Reserve.
Day 1: Nairobi – Kitale
Our driver will pick up from your residential house or hotel at Nairobi in the morning. This will be a long day drive of 470km which will take close to 7 hours. Our first stop over is at Nakuru town for early lunch and some shopping at Nakumatt Shopping Mall. This will take like 45min for lunch break, there after proceed with our journey to Kitale on the main Highway. From Nakuru to Eldoret will take like 3 hours and then 2 hours to reach to Kitale Town. Upon arrival you will check in to your Hotel, freshen up and relax after a long day drive. You will also have time to Familiarize with the people around. Dinner and overnight in at the Hotel
Day 2: Kitale- Chorlim gate
After breakfast at the Hotel, there after check out the hotel and accompanied by guide and crews we drive from Kitale to Chorlim gate for about 1hr, check in the park and also pick potters at the entrance thereafter our trek starts, hike to Mitamaiyo camp, the trekking from the gate to the camp normally take 4-5 hours. During the hiking you may spot monkeys and black and white Columbus monkeys, mountain francolins, turracos and black and white casqued hornbills. We will arrive at the camp early evening, Lunch en-route dinner and overnight at the camp
Day 3: Mitamaiyo camp- Koitobos camp
Very early in the morning breakfast will be provided then Leave the camp early morning to Koitobos camp which will take 7 to 8 hours with picnic lunch enroute. Blue Debrazza monkeys and black and white Columbus monkeys, mountain francolins, turracos and black and white casqued hornbills, will make your day. Dinner at a campfire and overnight at your campsite.
Day 4: Koitobos camp- Koitobass peak
Have an early morning breakfast. Depart for Koitobass peak the highest peak in Kenya (4,155 m) A 3 to 4 hours walk to the peak. Point Wagagai, the highest peak at (4321m) and in Uganda side can be seen from Koitobass. The Scenery is breathtaking, with the rolling hills on all sides below you. On your way, mountain francolin, guinea fowl. Malachite Sunbird can be seen. Beautiful Mountain vegetation great Lobelia, Ostrich lobelia and Hilichrysum (formosissimum (pink / white everlasting flowers) Will grace your morning walk. Lunch will be provided and enjoy the whole afternoon sunshine. Dinner and overnight at the campsite.
Day 5: Koitobos camp -Nairobi
After breakfast and check out from the camp start descending the mountain through the thick forest enjoying the morning sunshine, a leisurely walk which will take you to the Park Headquarter. Transfer to Nairobi through Nakuru. Arrive in the evening at Nairobi. Drop off at your Nairobi Hotel or international airport where your adventure ends.
